Travel + Leisure runs an annual reader survey, the World’s Best Awards, which includes a ranking of river cruise lines. In the 2026 results, published in July 2026, the top ten river cruise lines were, according to Travel Market Report’s summary of the 2026 results:

Two things stand out. First, the top two are small operators on exotic rivers — a reminder that guests who sail a remarkable river on a small, luxurious ship tend to rate the experience very highly. Second, the European lines that most North Americans consider fill the rest of the list, closely grouped.
Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, 2026
Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, announced each autumn, also rank river cruise lines from reader votes. In October 2026 Viking announced that readers had voted it No. 1 for river cruises in the 2026 awards, for the sixth year in a row. Viking is one of the biggest river cruise lines selling to North American travelers, so a win in a broad reader survey reflects both satisfaction and the sheer number of readers who have sailed with it.

How are these awards decided?
